Taste It In This Life

Tipping its hat to Asian cinematic convention, Tiger Beer ‘In This Life’ sends up the idea of reincarnation. With a roller coaster ride twisting audience expectations, it includes a panda’s attempted suicide and a beetle’s kamikaze run into a Tiger Beer bottle. Of course!

what

Digipost’s 3D and VFX team worked closely with production company Film Construction and agency Saatchi & Saatchi to make this unique and entertaining TVC, set in a familiar Asian city. The commercial takes us on a journey with a thirsty soul, as it travels through many lives searching for the ever elusive ice cold Tiger Beer. We begin the search human, but then undergo re-incarnation into different members of the animal kingdom. Finally a panda bear is all that stands between our hero and a cold one.

how

Each shot was supervised on set and framed from the point of view of the characters. To create the life-like panda, a stunt actor was filmed performing the animal’s movements. In post, the movements were tracked allowing the ‘Gollum-like’ stand-in to be replaced with the 3D panda. Digital set extensions completed the transformation of Auckland to Shanghai and, for the nest shot, live footage and stills were stitched together to create the leap transition. This was composited over a matte painting in 3D space in Inferno.
