Gecko

GECKO [gek-oh] -noun:   a chiefly tropical and usually nocturnal insectivorous terrestrial lizard with large eyes and adhesive toes giving it the ability to climb vertical surfaces

what

Gecko is alleged to be a Malay word derived from the sound of the lizard’s call.

The tiny animal is the ideal metaphor for this performance motor oil commercial destined for the Malaysian market.

The spot was produced by Digipost for Ogilvy & Mather Singapore, under the creative direction of Regional Creative Partner, Kevin Geeves.

The agency’s brief called for Castrol’s innovative product to be embodied by the Gecko, personifying the oil’s ability to protect engine and transmission components.

how

Digipost’s award-winning 3D team built virtual engine components and spent considerable time creating and refining the life-like lizard model.

An engaging animated performance was central to execution of the idea and a touch of humour was added to help deliver a viscous message.

Industrial-grade rendering ensured the animation achieved a high level of photo-realism.

Lead Digipost VFX artist Stu Bedford took care of the compositing and effects in Flame.

The predominantly 3D commercial is book-ended with live footage, providing local relevance for the target market.

The pictures were graded, combined with audio supplied and output in high definition.
