In this spot for Dulux paint, director Melanie Bridge takes her signature style in a new direction by blending the fantastic with the real. Embarking on what seems like a stop motion house painting adventure, Bridge directs a fun spot that blurs the lines between handcrafted animation and quirky computer animation.

How

Prior to the shoot the entire building was measured and a 3D replica built in Maya, this enabled us to get a precise 3D camera and virtual scene that we used to create an animatic.  Post shoot we tracked the real world camera, combined it with our model and immediately had an exact replica of the entire move and scene. From here, camera data and scene locators were exported to Aftereffects where most of the animation and compositing happened. More complex elements were created in Maya and Realflow. The animation itself was relatively straight forward once we had the necessary tracking data. The difficult part was settling on an overall design aesthetic that worked with the time-lapse camera move and the house itself as a canvas.
